Our History

Capacity Builders Inc. was originally founded in 1995 by Dr. Deborah Montgomery, an Anglo-raised entrepreneur with substantial Native American birth roots. Capacity Builders was officially incorporated as a 501C3 nonprofit in July 2010. It is registered as a nonprofit corporation on the Navajo Nation and has a Native-American controlled board of directors.

Almost 20 years ago, Dr. Montgomery formed the grant writing firm, Resource Associates (www.grantwriters.net). As a professional grant writer, Dr. Montgomery raised more than $200 million for the schools and nonprofits in San Juan County, New Mexico and for the Navajo Nation.

Capacity Builders Inc. represents Dr. Montgomery’s vision of using grant writing and her extensive knowledge of capacity building to improve the quality of life for the poorest and neediest communities and nonprofits in the United States. Also, as a former teen mother, she has led the board of directors to adopt a number of grant and locally funded initiatives that prevent and educate youth on pregnancy in addition to a number of other wellness initiatives.
