While with Capacity Builders Inc. I have gained an enormous amount of experience working with students in middle school and high school. Through this experience I have grown closer to the students in my TOP® Clubs and I am humbled by their ability and willingness to trust me. During the 2012-2013 school year, I had a couple of students in my TOP® Clubs who came to me during class and broke down in tears. I was completely overwhelmed the first couple of times but after taking them outside of class and talking with them I was able to help them through the things that that were bothering them.
I will always remember one particular student who broke down crying in class and I brought her into the hallway to speak with her. While we were outside talking, she began to tell me that she didn’t want to be at school because she was being bullied by some of her classmates. She was in tears and it was hard to understand what she was saying, but she began to tell me that she wanted to kill herself because of all that she had to deal with at school. I was shocked but relived that she trusted me enough to tell me how she was feeling and what she was going through. After we talked and she calmed down, my co-facilitator and I then took her to the office, called her parents and sat with her as she was explaining what was happening to her at school to the principal. I will never forget that situation and I’m thankful to be in the position where students are comfortable talking with me about their problems.
