NPS Intern
The NPS Intern will assist the NPS staff and report to the CBI Project Director in coordinating and performing tasks for the provision of meaningful work by NPS Crew Members and the Intern at specific National Parks around natural park restoration, conservation, construction, or rehabilitation of natural, cultural, historic, archaeological, recreational, or scenic resources. The work and training conducted is a result of a partnership between CBI and the NPS with the goals and projects set forth by the NPS as outlined in the CBI-NPS Task Agreement. Essential Duties:
1. As an NPS Intern, become familiar with requirements and perform activities required to become Public Lands Corp (PLC) eligible and certified that could lead to further employment, including with federal positions.
2. Read applicable documents, listen to presentations, and understand the general purpose of the projects and their importance to the National Park Service, as well as to the affiliated Native American Tribes and their culture.
3. Read and thoroughly understand all the NPS performance goals, project objectives, and tasks as outlined in the CBI - NPS Task Agreement.
4. Organize activities, lead activities and crew, and provide consistent and timely progress towards the NPS approved project goals and objectives.
5. Participate and provide, if directed, trainings required by NPS and CBI, including but not limited to work related safety, using construction and other tools, First Aid/CPR, health and wellness, career development, and cultural, historical, and natural resources.
6. Ensure that NPS crew members apply safety protocols in cases of injury and emergencies.
7. Contribute to CBI’s long-range goals and mission by dedicating efforts to advance the NPS and CBI goals with character, integrity, and honesty.
8. Promote active and broad participation by representing NPS and CBI in communications with community partners, volunteers, agencies, Navajo Nation Chapter Houses, and staff in other areas of CBI’s work through phone, email, video conferencing, and in-person interactions.
9. Attend CBI and NPS grant meetings, trainings, and phone/video conference calls.
10. Develop a professional resume, short and long-term career plans, complete “Work Key’s” training lessons and turn in at least 3 job applications for review by the end of the employment period to the CBI Human Resources Manager.
11. Be the liaison between CBI staff/management and NPS staff for planning a training schedule for the CBI/NPS ground crews working at the various NPS sites.
12. Complete and submit by the end of each week the following: Daily work logs, status of activities towards meeting goals and objectives, and the document planning out the NPS crew members’ work for the following week.
13. Receive from CBI and NPS feedback, praise, and criticism of the quality of work being performed by the crew, and respond appropriately and adjust work plans, guidance, and training and crew as needed.
14. This position will also support the various Parks’ workforce by performing duties designed to facilitate visitor understanding of park resources; facilitate visitor enjoyment of the Park(s) and their resources; facilitate and induce visitor behavior consistent with resources protection, preservation, and conservation; gain friendly compliance with laws and rules for safe use of the Park(s); and encourage visitors to develop a sense of stewardship for Park(s) resources. To accomplish these supportive themes, the NPS Intern duties may include, but not be limited to, the following:
a. Plan and present environmental education programs to be provided in person or virtually, multi-media presentations, hands-on demonstrations, walks and tours, structured and impromptu talks, and various other programs with the assistance from the NPS staff.
b. Assist in promoting conservation work projects and prepare interpretive media, displays, and written items for print and/or electronic publication.
c. Assist in the operation of Park(s)’ Visitor Center, and coordinate communication with the Park(s)’ cooperating association.
d. Coordinate and host special Park(s) programming, events, workshops, and outreach.
e. Perform various administrative duties, such as recording and reporting visitor statistics, and gathering information and data for reports.
f. Educate Park visits regarding activities that impact the preservation and conservation of natural and cultural resources, including issues dealing with visitor safety.
g. As required, travel from one NPS Park to another Park, community events, partner work sites, and other work-related destinations during a workday.
h. Additional duties as assigned that may include the following:
i. Community outreach activities and general housekeeping
ii. Occasionally assist at other nearby other Parks, such as Hubbell Trading Post National Historical Stie (HUTR), the Navajo National Monument (NAVA), and other related sites.
15. Other duties as requested and assigned by Supervisor.
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Proof of citizenship or national of the U.S.
High School Diploma or GED.
Be between the age of 18 to 30 years old as per NPS requirements
Pass a Federal Background check as required by NPS and CBI
Pass random and reasonable suspicion alcohol and drug testing during employment.
Possession of a current Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record as required by CBI and NPS.
Cannot be a Civil Service Federal employee in application process or during the seasonal work period as per the NPS requirements.
Must have reliable transportation to travel to work sites and other designated regional locations, including to Farmington, NM if needed, unless CBI is providing transportation.
At least light experience using general office equipment, such as a calculator, copy machine, printer, and computer.
At least light experience using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint), a plus.
Experience public speaking a plus.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Sitting for long periods of time.
Ability to work outside in various weather conditions, such as heat, wind, and rain.
Use of computer, keyboard, and monitor, if necessary.
Must be able to lift and carry up to 15 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Close visual acuity to performance activities such as preparing and analyzing data and figures, viewing a computer terminal, and extensive reading.
Must be able to speak English and listen, hearing sound, and spoken words.
Ability to speak, read, and understand Navajo is not required, but a plus.
