Peer Recovery Coach for Gallup, NM


General Responsibilities 

  • The Peer Recovery Coach assists the PRC team to extend age and culturally appropriate peer support beyond the clinical setting into the daily living environment by providing recovery support services to engage, activate, and advocate for children, youth, and their families/caregivers who have been victimized by neglect, abuse, or violence because of a family member/caregiver’s substance use.

Essential Duties

  1. Initially provide the client with information on your role as a Peer Recovery Coach.

  2. Establish a respectful and purposeful relationship with clients.

  3. Provide professional encouragement and a hopeful attitude to clients.

  4. Share personal experiences as indicated by the individual clients, while keeping appropriate boundaries.

  5. Review and understand all aspects, activities, outcomes, and regulations pertaining to the Peer Recovery Coach Program grant funded program, as well as all CBI, including Counseling Services, policies and procedures.

  6. Participation in program required training, such as “The Horse Journey”, and suicide prevention.

  7. Once CBI is approved for Medicaid billing, they participate in training on how to properly bill for same.

  8. Make referrals as needed to CBI’s Behavioral Health Service providers or other agencies for counseling.

  9. Develop and maintain positive working relationships with partner organizations to work with and receive referrals for children and youth, such as The Hozho Center, Northern TREE House Shelter, Navajo Nation Department of Self Reliance (TANF), Navajo Nation Departments of Corrections and Social Services, Four Corners Native American Ministry, Cenikor, and Total Behavioral Health.

  10. Participates in PRC team activities such as attending frequent team meetings, and outreach events, .

  11. Participate in new committee for further development of best practices for assisting children, youth, and families affected by the drug crisis.

  12. Promote collaboration between agencies and providers within the FCIHN - Four Corner Indigenous Health Network Consortium for services and treatment options.

  13. Promote Peer Support Training for individuals who have had successful recovery and willing to share experiences with community and children/youth clients.

  14. Assist with development of “recovery coaches” with community members, partnering organizations, and members of various collaborations, such as to train and prepare individuals to talk in groups about their experience.

  15. Promote the discussion of developing recovery resources with the FCIHN and other consortiums.

  16. Coordinate Talking Circle groups to promote healing, resolution, and community centered support for individuals who have been victimized.

  17. Provide services such as engagement and motivational enhancement strategies, and problem solving. .

  18. Learn, if not already trained, and utilize a harm reduction approach to treatment.

  19. Utilize creativity to provide support in an evidenced based way during sessions and while helping with the other basic needs:

  20. Examples include going with the clients to explore new hobbies or recreational activities as they try to find healthy ways to occupy their time with and without family members.

  21. Consistently works with PRC clients by assisting them with building age-appropriate skills that help promote their recovery from the effects of family substance use and self-sufficiency, such but are not limited to the following:

    1. Social and communication skills training

    2. Making friends and setting boundaries.

    3. Function skills training to enhance independent living (i.e., activities of daily living (ADLs), safety planning, transportation planning, educational and career pursuits, and money management.)

  22. Provides coaching and consultation to clients to promote recovery and self-direction.

  23. Models’ skills for and provide consultation to fellow team members.

  24. Provide support to clients in various ways that may include advocacy and providing resources.

  25. The position may provide support for the team, such as participation in developing a resource guide.

  26. Provide data and information for clients and funder reports, while maintaining required confidentiality.

  27. Maintain client records as required.

  28. Research and participate in on-line, video, and in-person training to gain more knowledge and skills for performance of job upon approval of Supervisor.

  29. Perform other duties as assigned or required.

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Associates, bachelor’s, or master’s degree in related areas preferred but not required.

  • Peer Support Worker certification preferred but not required.

  • Lived Experience as a child/youth victim of poly-victimization.

  • Possess valid authorization to work in the United States.

  • Possession of a current Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record.

  • Ability to pass background checks to work with children and youth.

  • Experience and skill in the use of general office equipment.

  • Experience and skill in using Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, web-based programs, etc.

  • Ability to communicate in written and/or oral Diné language a plus.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Use of a computer, keyboard and monitor and sitting for long periods of time may be necessary.

  • Must be able to lift and carry approximately 15 pounds.

  • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Close visual acuity to performance activities such as preparing and analyzing data and figures, viewing a computer terminal, and extensive reading.

  • Must be able to speak English and listen, hearing sound and spoken words.
