Transportation Dispatcher


The Dispatcher works to direct the day-to-day route and trip operations of CBI’s Transportation services: Let’s Go Transportation, Red Apple Transit, including the medical, and non-emergency services. The position assists with organizing and conducting activities to assure safe, cost-effective, on-time operating performance, plus tracks and reports sign-in/sign-out times, assures routes are timely, and communicates service issues to the appropriate staff and management. This work is done in compliance with the procedures defined by the Client and in conformance with CBI, City of Farmington, and Union policies and procedures, as well as in compliance with all transportation regulatory agencies, such as State and Federal Departments of Regulations.

Essential Duties:

  1. Assist with all phone call information and dispatching of rides efficiently.

  2. Organize and optimize trip routes for efficiency and timely service.

  3. Provide drivers with directions to their destinations as needed.

  4. Assist drivers and transportation providers with scheduling issues.

  5. Establish and maintain effective communication with transportation providers.

  6. Distinguish between routine and emergency situations, and apply all safety protocols for the safety of the passenger, driver, and public.

  7. Document and report all incidents and accidents to the applicable management and staff.

  8. Document and report provider no-shows or on-time-performance issues.

  9. Notify transportation providers of their next day’s trips and any new trips that occur.

  10. Monitor Citizens Band (CB) radio, telephones, and on-road provision of service for quality.

  11. Record time of departure, destination, and expected time of return.

  12. Provide feedback on drivers’ performance to management.

  13. Complete thorough vehicle pre-trip, post-trip, and Driver Vehicle Inspection (DVI) reports as required.

  14. Demonstrate knowledge of Federal Transit Administration (FTA) and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, as well as CBI’s Driver Manual and policies.

  15. Complete all required paperwork accurately and in a timely manner.

  16. Attend union and staff meetings and trainings as requested.

  17. Perform other duties as assigned or required.

Education/Certification/Experience Requirements

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.

  • Must be 24 years old of age.

  • Two+ years’ experience in transportation routing, dispatching, and scheduling preferred.

  • One year experience working with the applicable transit scheduling system preferred.

  • Knowledge of GPS and GIS systems is a plus.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail and timeliness.

  • Ability to work flexible hours as required.

  • Proficiency in scheduling software, two-way radio communication, and data analysis.

  • Valid authorization to work in the United States.

  • Must have driving experience.

  • Successful completion of a criminal background check and Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) background check.

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).

  • Must pass pre-employment and random drug screenings.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit for extended periods.

  • Frequent use of a computer, keyboard, and monitor.

  • Must be able to lift and carry approximately 15 pounds.

  • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Close visual acuity to performance activities such as preparing and analyzing data and figures, viewing a computer terminal, and extensive reading.

  • Must be able to clearly communicate in English, both verbally and in writing.
